Shanlin Junior High opened on August 1, 1957, as a branch of Kaohsiung County Qishan Junior High, becoming independent in April 1962. Today it enrolls only around 83 students, reflecting significant rural depopulation in the district. Its school song was composed by the noted pianist Chang Tsai-shiang.
