Shanhua Junior High School was founded in March 1946 as “Tainan County Shanhua Junior Middle School,” with the Shanhua town mayor concurrently overseeing school affairs in the early postwar years. It was renamed “Tainan County Shanhua Junior High School” in September 1968 under the nationwide shift to nine-year compulsory education, and became “Tainan City Shanhua Junior High School” in December 2010 after the Tainan county-city merger. The campus sits on the north side of Shanhua by the Zengwen River, on the original site of the Japanese-era Shanhua Common School.
善化國中創立於民國35年（1946年）3月，初名「臺南縣立善化初級中學」，創校初期由善化鎮鎮長兼理校務。民國57年（1968年）9月，隨九年國教實施改名「臺南縣立善化國民中學」；民國99年（2010年）12月臺南縣市合併後，更名為「臺南市立善化國民中學」。校址位於善化北側曾文溪畔，正是日治時期善化公學校的原址。

A campus building named “光文樓” (Guangwen Hall) honors Ming-loyalist scholar Shen Guangwen, who settled, taught, and practiced medicine in the Shanhua area in the 17th century.

The school's “光文樓” (Guangwen Hall) building name ties it directly to Shen Guangwen (沈光文), the 17th-century Ming-loyalist scholar who settled in what is now Shanhua and is honored across the town in street and neighborhood names such as Guangwen Village (光文里) and Guangwen Road (光文路).
