A century of schooling on Little Kinmen.
Shangqi Elementary opened in February 1921 as "Lieyu Sixth District Second National School," funded originally by donations from the local community in Qingqi village. It was renamed "Qishan Elementary" in 1947 and took its current name, "Shangqi National Elementary School," in 1950, aligning again with Taiwan's nine-year education reform in 1967. Now over a century old, the school made history in 2019 by establishing Kinmen's first toddler class for two-year-olds, and in 2025 it was recognized nationally with an "Excellence Bronze Award" in health promotion. At its 96th anniversary, the school honored 29 alumni ranging in age from 80 to 102.

A century of survival on Little Kinmen.
One of Kinmen's oldest schools, over a century old, on the frontline islet of Lieyu — its history spans the pre-war era, Japanese occupation, and the Cold War artillery-battle period that shaped all of Little Kinmen's institutions. See the Kinmen county page for more on the region.
