Shandong Elementary began in 1948 as a branch classroom of Dalun Elementary School, becoming an independent school in 1956 under the name "Taoyuan County Zhongli Town Shandong Elementary." The school takes its name from Shandong Village (山東里), the local administrative area it serves. It has marked a 60th-anniversary celebration, complete with an archive of all its past principals maintained on a dedicated anniversary website.

Like several of Zhongli's mid-century schools, Shandong Elementary grew out of a larger neighboring school — in this case Dalun Elementary — as the district's population spread into new villages after the war. Its name simply reflects the place it has always served, Shandong Village, though the deeper story of how that village itself came to be named is not something this profile can confirm.
