From zero new students to a formal closure.
Shalun Elementary was founded in 1960 and served Shalun Village in Dayuan District for over six decades. The school became notorious in local press as "Taoyuan's only elementary school with zero new students" in the 2023 school year, after its single incoming pupil transferred away before the term began. It stopped accepting new students in April 2024 and was formally closed at the end of July that year — one of several Dayuan elementary schools abolished in 2024 due to land expropriation for the Taoyuan Aerotropolis project. Its remaining students transferred to Dayuan Elementary and Guolin Elementary. We keep this page as a historical record of a school whose dwindling enrollment mirrored the broader hollowing-out of Dayuan's original farming and fishing villages.

🕊️ A Dignified Ending
Rather than an abrupt shutdown, the school phased out gradually, stopping new enrollment in April 2024 before its formal closure that July.
A village hollowed out, and a village overflowing.
Shalun's dwindling-to-zero enrollment and subsequent closure is one of the most vivid data points illustrating how the airport-driven Aerotropolis project has hollowed out Dayuan's original farming and fishing villages — a trend starkly at odds with overcrowded Chaoyin Elementary just a few kilometers away.
