A hundred years beside the highway.
Shakeng Elementary began in 1917, during the Japanese colonial era, as a branch teaching site of Shuqilin Public School serving the Shakeng area. It became an independent school in 1921 and took its present name in 1941. Sitting directly on Provincial Highway 3 through Hengshan Township, the school celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017 and today takes part in Hakka-language living-school programs sponsored by the Hakka Affairs Council — part of the region's ongoing effort to keep Hakka language and culture active for its youngest residents.
