Sanwan Junior High School was founded amid a local timber and mining boom, when Sanwan's population reached roughly 20,000 and the township's remote geography meant youths otherwise had to leave home for schooling. A preparatory committee formed on April 7, 1961, and classes began that August as Sanwan Junior Middle School, opening with 3 classes and 168 students. The school was renamed Sanwan Junior High in 1968. Today, its alumni network — most residents around 60 years old attended — remains a key social organizing structure in the local Hakka farming and orchard communities.
三灣國中創立於1960年代初期林業與礦業興盛、人口一度達兩萬人的時期，因鄉內地處偏遠，青少年原本必須離鄉就學。籌備委員會於1961年（民國50年）4月7日成立，同年8月正式開學，初名「三灣初級中學」，開辦時僅3班、168名學生，1968年更名為三灣國民中學。如今，該校校友網絡（當地約六十歲居民多為校友）仍是三灣客家農村與果園社區重要的社會連結結構。
