A small school beside a landmark of human history.
Sanjian Elementary serves Sanjian Village on Taitung's remote northern coast — a village once shared, at different times, by Siraya, Amis, and Kavalan peoples. What makes this small rural school truly remarkable is its location: Sanjian Village is home to the Baxian (Eight Immortals) Caves, a series of sea caves where archaeologists uncovered, between 1968 and 1969, stone tools and other evidence of the Changbin Culture — Taiwan's oldest confirmed prehistoric human culture, dated to roughly 30,000 to 15,000 years ago. Students here grow up literally down the road from one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in Taiwan's history.

🏛️ Neighbor to Taiwan's Oldest Known Culture
長濱文化的發源地
The Baxian Caves within Sanjian Village gave their name to the Changbin Culture — evidence of human habitation in Taiwan dating back roughly 30,000 years, making this one of the most historically significant school locations on the island.
🌊 A Meeting Point of Three Peoples
西拉雅、阿美、噶瑪蘭交會之地
Sanjian Village was once home to Siraya, Amis, and Kavalan communities together, layering millennia of Indigenous history onto this stretch of coastline long before the modern township existed.
🏫 A Small School, A Landmark Backdrop
小校旁的世界級遺址
Like many schools on this remote stretch of coast, Sanjian is a small rural elementary — yet it sits beside a nationally designated archaeological site that draws researchers and visitors from across Taiwan.
The Baxian Caves and the Changbin Culture.
The Baxian (Eight Immortals) Caves, located within Sanjian Village, are where archaeologists discovered evidence of the Changbin Culture in 1968–69 — stone tools left by Taiwan's earliest known inhabitants roughly 30,000 to 15,000 years ago. It is one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites in Taiwan, and this school shares its village with it.
