Home of Taipei's famous "Red Building."
Rixin Elementary was founded in 1917, during the Japanese colonial era, under the name "大稻埕第二公學校" (Dadaocheng No. 2 Public School); it was renamed 日新公學校 (Rixin Public School) in 1922, became 臺北市日新國民學校 in 1945, and 臺北市大同區日新國民小學 in 1946. The school's name "日新" is drawn from the Book of Documents (尚書·湯之盤銘): "苟日新,日日新,又日新" — "renew yourself daily." Its iconic red-brick heritage building, known as the "紅樓" (Red Building), was completed and put into use in 1920, filled in from what had been rice paddies and ponds. The school was originally boys-only, beginning to admit girls in 1934, though initially in separate classes.

A landmark of Dadaocheng's school-building boom.
Founded as a satellite of Dadaocheng's original public school system, Rixin's red-brick 1920 heritage building is a physical landmark of the Japanese-era Dadaocheng school-building boom in what is now Datong District. The Red Building still stands today as one of the neighborhood's most recognizable pieces of colonial-era architecture.
