From branch campus to national university.
National Quemoy University traces its origins to July 1997, when it was established as a branch campus of National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology. It became an independent institution on August 1, 2003, as National Kinmen Institute of Technology, and was upgraded and renamed National Quemoy University on June 14, 2010. The English name "Quemoy" was chosen deliberately over the Hanyu Pinyin romanization, because it is the historically internationalized name for Kinmen that has appeared on Western maps since the age of exploration. As the only university in Kinmen County, NQU anchors the county's higher-education identity.
國立金門大學的前身可追溯至民國86年（1997年）7月，最初為國立高雄科技大學的分部。民國92年（2003年）8月1日獨立設校，改制為「國立金門技術學院」，並於民國99年（2010年）6月14日升格改名為「國立金門大學」。英文校名刻意選用「Quemoy」而非漢語拼音，因為這是自大航海時代以來，西方地圖上長期使用、國際通行的金門歷史名稱。作為金門縣唯一的大學，金門大學是全縣高等教育的重要指標。
