A small mountain school with a big reading reputation.
Qingshan Elementary was founded in 1927 under Japanese colonial rule as the "Samohai Educational Institute" (サモハイ教育所). It was renamed Shamo National Elementary School after the war, then took its present name, Qingshan, in 1983 when the surrounding village was itself renamed. Today it is a small Paiwan tribal village school with fewer than 100 students, located along the scenic, mountain-hugging Yanshan Highway in the northern reaches of Pingtung's mountain belt. The school has won the Ministry of Education's Reading "Pinnacle School" (閱讀磐石學校) award as well as the Indigenous/Local Education Contribution Award.

A Paiwan village at the mountain's edge.
Qingshan Elementary sits within Sandimen's mountain belt, a Paiwan tribal region shaped by traditional slate-house settlement patterns and mountain agriculture. Its long history — dating back to a Japanese-era educational institute nearly a century ago — mirrors the layered history of the Paiwan villages of the Sandimen highlands, where old place names, colonial-era institutions, and post-war renamings have all left their mark on the landscape.
