A school renamed twice with its island.

Qimei Elementary descends from the Japanese-era "Dayu National School." It was renamed "Dayu Elementary" for Dayu Township in 1946, then renamed again to "Qimei Elementary" in 1949 when Dayu Township itself was renamed Qimei Township, and became "Qimei National Elementary School" in 1968. In 1952, the school set up a West Lake branch class, which later became independent as today's Shuanghu Elementary School. Its school district today covers four villages — Nangang, Haifeng, Zhonghe, and Pinghe — and the school has marked its 80th graduation ceremony in recent years.

Qimei, island of legend and the heart-shaped weir.

💙

Qimei — "Seven Beauties" — took its name from a legend of seven women who drowned themselves rather than be captured by pirates. The island is also home to the world-famous heart-shaped stone fish weir (雙心石滬), built by generations of fishing families. Qimei Elementary sits within this island's deep fishing and folklore heritage. See the Penghu county page for more on the region.
