Born in a temple, grown into a landmark.
Cijin Elementary traces its roots to June 1897, when the "Takao Japanese-Language Training Institute" began holding classes in a temporary classroom at the Linshuigong temple. It was formally chartered as "Takao Public School" on October 1, 1898, moved to its present site in 1914, and took its current name, Cijin Elementary, in 1968. During the Second World War, the school was evacuated to Shoushan National School in February 1945 due to US bombing; after the war, alumnus Lin Shoupan became the school's first Taiwanese principal.

With roots reaching back to 1897, Cijin Elementary's history mirrors that of the historic Qihou settlement it grew up alongside.
From Qihou to Cijin.
The school's history mirrors the naming history of the "Qihou" settlement — the sandbar's shape, said to resemble a flag behind a hill, gave rise to the name "Qihou," while the peninsula later took the name "Cijin" from a Japanese-era literary group, the Cijin Poetry Society. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
