A new campus built on an old folk tradition.
Chiaoyong Elementary School sits just inside Hengchun's historic West Gate, within the old walled town that anchors Taiwan's southernmost major community. The school describes its own history as spanning roughly six decades. Its most visible recent milestone is a new three-story, 34-classroom campus building completed in September 2021 after a two-and-a-half-year construction project costing NT$144.06 million — and its design deliberately incorporates the moon guitar (月琴), the traditional instrument at the heart of Hengchun's folk-ballad heritage.

The school sits near Hengchun's historic West Gate (西門), placing it squarely within the fabric of the old walled town.
Inside Taiwan's historic walled town.
Hengchun's historic walled city, built in 1875, still stands with its original gates, and Chiaoyong Elementary sits right by the old West Gate — close enough that its new building's architects chose to honor the region's moon guitar (月琴) folk-ballad tradition in the design itself. Hengchun remains the main gateway to Kenting National Park, so the school's students grow up at the crossroads of old-city heritage and Taiwan's busiest beach-tourism corridor. See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
