From a girls' school to the county's largest.
Renai Elementary School was founded on April 1, 1924, as a girls' public school, splitting off 259 female students from Pingtung Public School into seven classes. It became coeducational in 1937 as Pingtung City Ōmiya Public School, and took its current name, Renai National Elementary School, in 1950. Today it is the elementary school with the most students and teachers in Pingtung County. In 1987, the school established a "Music Gifted Experimental Class" with support from local community leaders and government. It recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, with alumni including former Premier Su Tseng-chang returning for the celebration.
