Dongguang Elementary School was established by the Pingtung County government to implement small-class-size education policy near the Donggang district's administrative center. Land acquisition began in 1991, planning started in 2000 under the administration of nearby Donggang Elementary School, and construction began in December 2001 at a cost of NT$74.27 million. The first phase of the campus was completed and opened for enrollment on August 20, 2002. In 2006, the school established a Chinese traditional music class (國樂班) to teach traditional music to its students, a program that continues to shape the school's identity today.
東光國小由屏東縣政府為推動小班制教育而創立,校址鄰近東港區行政中心。徵地作業始於民國80年(1991年),民國89年(2000年)由鄰近的東港國小代為規劃,民國90年(2001年)12月動工,工程經費約新台幣7,427萬元。第一期校舍於民國91年(2002年)8月20日完工並開始招生。民國95年(2006年)學校成立國樂班,教授學生傳統音樂,至今仍是本校特色之一。

Donggang Town is Taiwan's noted bluefin tuna fishing port and hosts the triennial King Boat Burning Festival at Donglong Temple, a nationally recognized intangible cultural heritage tradition.
