A century of teaching, rebuilt more than once.
Penglai Elementary was founded in 1921 during the Japanese colonial era as the "Hongmaoguan Aboriginal Children's Education Institute." It was renamed in 1937, again after Taiwan's retrocession in 1945, and once more in 1947 after a typhoon destroyed the original building. The school celebrated its 100th anniversary in May 2021. Today, over 70% of its students are Atayal Indigenous, most from families originally connected to Nan'ao Township, and the school's vision statement reads: "Art awakens joyful living, Penglai's fragrant world."

🎉 A Century of History
Founded in 1921 and rebuilt after wartime renaming and a destructive typhoon, the school marked its 100th anniversary in May 2021 with a history spanning colonial rule, retrocession, and postwar rebuilding.
🧡 A Majority-Atayal Student Body
Over 70% of students are Atayal Indigenous, many from families whose roots trace back to Nan'ao Township — making Penglai a school shaped by Atayal community life even though it sits in Su'ao.
🌉 A Bridge Between Two Townships
Though administratively part of Su'ao Township, the school's Atayal student body connects it closely to the Indigenous mountain communities of neighboring Nan'ao.
🎨 Art as Everyday Joy
The school's guiding vision places art at the center of daily learning, framing creativity as a source of joy rather than a separate subject.
A rare bridge school.
Though technically in Su'ao Township, Penglai's student body is majority Atayal Indigenous, many descending from families in Nan'ao Township — making it a rare bridge school between Su'ao's fishing-town identity and Nan'ao's Indigenous mountain communities.
