A school renamed four times, remembered for a pickle barrel.
Peiwen Elementary School's documented history begins in 1940, when it relocated to its current site as "Madou West Public School" (麻豆西公學校); an earlier, independent founding date has not been confirmed in available records. The school was renamed several times afterward: Madou West National School (1941), Madou No. 2 National School (1946), Madou Township Peiwen National School (1947), and finally Peiwen Elementary School in 1968. In 2020, Peiwen built a widely photographed "giant pickled-vegetable barrel" (大鹹菜桶) themed playground commemorating Madou's historic role as a center of Taiwanese pickled-mustard (鹹菜) production, complete with a terrazzo slide shaped like a barrel, a climbing wall, and a rope net, plus an on-campus "pickled-vegetable culture zone" featuring real oversized wooden barrels.

🥬 A Pickled-Vegetable Culture Zone
The campus includes a dedicated cultural display of real oversized wooden pickling barrels, connecting students directly to a local food tradition.
Madou's other food heritage.
Peiwen's signature playground directly commemorates Madou's lesser-known identity — alongside its famous pomelos — as a historic hub of pickled-mustard-green (鹹菜) production, a concrete and non-generic tie between the school and its local food heritage. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
