Taitung's oldest school, through every era of its history.

This school's lineage traces back to 1895, when it began as a government-funded charity school — considered Taitung's earliest public educational institution, predating the full establishment of Japanese colonial administration over the school system. It was formalized in 1897 as the Taitung Japanese Language Training Institute, became "臺東公學校" in 1905, and has been renamed multiple times across the Qing, Japanese colonial, and Republic of China eras before settling on its current name in 2003. On June 8, 1965, Typhoon Dinah completely destroyed the campus buildings, forcing a full reconstruction at the school's present site — a defining event in its long institutional memory.
