From 127 students on Heping Island to Taiwan's ocean-sciences flagship.
National Taiwan Ocean University was founded on June 1, 1953, as the Taiwan Provincial Maritime Vocational School, opening at Badouzi on Heping Island in Keelung with only about 300 ping (roughly 1,000 square meters) of land and 127 students across three departments: navigation, marine engineering, and fishing. The school was upgraded to Taiwan Provincial Ocean College in 1964, and undertook land reclamation to expand its campus after becoming National Taiwan Ocean College in 1979. It reached full university status in 1989, and its campus has since grown from that original 300 ping to roughly 60 hectares today.
