A century of teacher training, two founding stories.

National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) tells its own history two ways. Its centennial branding traces a lineage back to June 1922 and the founding of Taihoku Higher School (臺北高等學校) under Japanese rule — a preparatory school for university admission, described by NTNU as the starting point of its identity. Separately, and more directly documented, the Taiwan Provincial Government established the Taiwan Provincial Teachers College (臺灣省立師範學院) on June 5, 1946, specifically to train secondary-school teachers. That college became Taiwan Provincial Normal University in 1955, and was elevated to national status as National Taiwan Normal University on July 1, 1967. Today NTNU has grown into a comprehensive university of ten colleges, while remaining Taiwan's flagship institution for teacher education and, through its Mandarin Training Center, one of the country's principal gateways for learning Chinese.
