An island's own university, built from a branch campus.
National Penghu University of Science and Technology (NPU) began on August 1, 1991, as a branch campus of Kaohsiung Marine College, established to bring higher education to Taiwan's outlying island county. It became fully independent in 1995 as the National Penghu Institute of Maritime Technology, was upgraded to junior college status in 2000, and became a full university on August 1, 2005. Today NPU stands as the first and only university of science and technology on any outlying island of Taiwan — and the first university anywhere in the Taiwan Strait region — serving around 2,400 students from its campus in Magong City.

An island economy on campus.
As the only university in Taiwan's outlying island county, NPU's marine resources, fisheries, and tourism/leisure programs are directly built around Penghu's fishing-island geography and economy, while its wind turbine research park turns the county's famously strong monsoon winds into a subject of study. See the Penghu county page for more on the region.
