Two colleges, merged into one university.
National Pingtung University (NPTU) was formally established on 1 August 2014 through the merger of National Pingtung University of Education (NPUE), a longstanding teacher-training college, and National Pingtung Institute of Commerce (NPIC), a business-focused institute. The merger was first resolved by the university council back in 2005, but it took nearly a decade to complete. The result is an unusual combination for a Taiwanese university: education, business, and science programs under a single roof. NPTU now spans four campuses — three in Pingtung City and one in nearby Checheng Township — and also maintains an affiliated experimental elementary school, a legacy of its teacher-training heritage.

A teacher-training legacy for Pingtung's schools.
Rather than the agricultural focus common among Pingtung's other higher-education institutions, NPTU's local connection runs through teacher education — training generations of teachers for Pingtung County's schools — and through Mt. Dawu College's work with the county's mountain Indigenous communities. See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
