From an agricultural school to a comprehensive university.
National Ilan University (NIU) traces its origins to May 12, 1926, when it was founded as "Taihoku Prefectural Yilan Agricultural and Forestry School" — the first secondary school established in Yilan and the first agricultural school in northern Taiwan. Over the following decades it was upgraded repeatedly: to a vocational agricultural school in 1946, renamed to add engineering programs in 1967, elevated to a junior college in 1988, reorganized as the National Ilan Institute of Technology in 1998, and finally granted full university status as National Ilan University in 2003. Today NIU comprises four colleges — Bioresources, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Engineering, and Humanities and Management — serving roughly 5,000 students.

Rooted in Yilan's agricultural and forestry heritage as northern Taiwan's first agricultural school, the university's origins are deeply tied to the rice-farming and forestry economy of the Lanyang Plain. See the Yilan County schools page for more on the region.
