From an Amis-only school to an Amis culture school.
This school was founded on April 1, 1917, under Japanese colonial rule as "Sharuwan Aboriginal Public School" (沙汝灣蕃人公學校), one of the oldest Indigenous-designated schools on Taiwan's east coast — a school built specifically for Amis children under a colonial education system. More than a century later, the school has reclaimed and transformed that history: it has been rebranded as "Salimpo," an Indigenous experimental elementary school whose curriculum centers on Amis mountain-sea culture. Despite its small size — around 29 students — the school won first place in the 2025 Commonwealth Magazine Sustainable Taiwan Creative Curriculum Competition.

In 2025, this school of roughly 29 students took first place in the Commonwealth Magazine Sustainable Taiwan Creative Curriculum Competition — proof that scale is no barrier to educational innovation here.

Founded in 1917 as an Amis-only school under Japanese rule, the school's transformation into today's Indigenous experimental school reflects a broader story of communities reclaiming their own educational institutions.
One of Changbin's oldest Indigenous schools.
Founded in 1917 explicitly as an Amis-only school and now reborn as the Salimpo Amis Mountain-Sea Culture Experimental Elementary School, this is one of the most direct embodiments of Changbin's Amis Indigenous identity found anywhere in the township — a full-circle transformation from colonial-era segregation to Indigenous-led education.
