A century-old school marked by sacred Paiwan symbols.

Neishi Elementary School's earliest documented roots trace to 1903, with some records citing 1906 for the earliest documented site; the school is celebrated locally as a “century-old school” (百年小學). Its campus gate features low pillared walls carved with sun and hundred-pace-snake (百步蛇) relief motifs and topped with pottery-jar (陶壺) ornaments — all sacred symbols in Paiwan tradition — while the school buildings are painted bright orange, reflecting indigenous design aesthetics. The campus is surrounded by mango orchards, with the South-Link Railway running behind its athletic field, and its soccer team has represented Taiwan in international competitions.

Local Culture ·

Neishi, sacred symbols meet mountain-coast geography.

🐍

Shizi Township's Neishi (Nei-Lion) community sits along the South-Link Railway corridor in mango-growing country at the southern tip of the Central Mountain Range, embodying the township's blend of Paiwan heritage and mountain-coast geography. The sun and hundred-pace snake carved into the school's own gate are not decoration for its own sake — both are sacred symbols in Paiwan cosmology, reflecting the community's living relationship with its traditions.
