National Chiayi University (NCYU) was formed on February 1, 2000, through the merger of National Chiayi Normal College (founded 1957) and National Chiayi Institute of Technology, whose agricultural and forestry-school roots trace back to 1919. The merger is cited as the first successful case of university consolidation in Taiwan's higher education history. Today NCYU operates seven colleges — Teacher Education, Humanities and Arts, Management, Agriculture, Engineering/Science, Life Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine — spanning 39 departments, 43 master's programs, and 7 doctoral programs across four campuses in and around Chiayi.
國立嘉義大學（NCYU）於民國89年（2000年）2月1日，由國立嘉義師範學院（創於1957年）與國立嘉義技術學院（其農林教育根源可追溯至1919年）合併成立，是台灣高等教育史上第一個成功合併的大學案例。現今嘉義大學設有師範學院、人文藝術學院、管理學院、農學院、工程/理學院、生命科學院、獸醫學院共七大學院，橫跨39個系所、43個碩士班與7個博士班，並在嘉義市周邊設有四個校區。
