Established on August 1, 1971 as the affiliated elementary school of Taiwan Provincial Chiayi Normal College, this school was renamed in 1987 when the college became Chiayi Teachers College, and again in 2000 when it became part of National Chiayi University. Through these transitions it became Chiayi City's first national (central-government-run) public elementary school, and today runs an inquiry-based, internationally oriented curriculum with astronomy and cross-disciplinary modules.
創校於民國60年(1971年)8月1日,前身為臺灣省立嘉義師範專科學校附屬國小。民國76年(1987年)該校改制為嘉義師範學院時更名,民國89年(2000年)再因嘉義師範學院併入國立嘉義大學而改為現名。歷經數次沿革,成為嘉義市第一所國立公立國小,現今推動探究導向、國際化的課程,並融入天文與跨領域教學模組。
