A century-spanning lineage, refounded in Zhongli.
National Central University traces its roots to Sanjiang Normal School, founded in Nanjing around 1902 during the late Qing dynasty, which became National Nanjing Normal College in 1915 and was renamed National Central University in 1928. Under president Luo Jia-lun the university relocated west to Chongqing during the Second Sino-Japanese War and grew into one of China's most comprehensive wartime universities. After 1949, the university did not resume operations all at once in Taiwan — its geophysics program was first revived in Miaoli in 1962, then relocated to Zhongli in 1968 and expanded into a College of Science. The institution formally resumed the name "National Central University" in 1979, and the current Zhongli campus has been in continuous operation since 1968.
