From a female teachers' college to a normal university.
National Kaohsiung Normal University began in 1954 as the Taiwan Provincial Kaohsiung Female Teachers' College. It became National Kaohsiung Teachers' College in 1980, and was re-established as a full normal university on August 1, 1989. NKNU now spans two campuses: the 13-hectare Ho-Ping Campus in urban Lingya District, and the 50-hectare Yanchao Campus, which was inaugurated in 1990. Organized into five colleges — Education, Humanities, Science, Technology, and Arts — the university has shaped generations of educators, with roughly 70% of teachers and education administrators in southern Taiwan carrying some connection to NKNU.
