Nanzih Elementary was founded in 1900, during the period of Japanese colonial rule, as "Nanzikeng Public School" (楠仔坑公學校). It was renamed to its current name in September 1968. With more than 120 years of history, it is one of the oldest schools in the Nanzih area, and its original name is in fact the source of the place name that the district — and its junior high and senior high namesakes — now carry.
楠梓國小創立於西元1900年（日治時期），原名「楠仔坑公學校」，民國57年（1968年）9月改為現名。校史已逾120年，是楠梓地區歷史最悠久的學校之一，其原始校名正是「楠梓」（楠仔坑）地名的源頭，也是全區同名機構（楠梓國中、楠梓高中）命名之所本。

Nanzih Elementary's original name preserves "楠仔坑" (Nanzikeng, "Camphor-Tree Gully"), a Qing-era place name describing valley terrain once thick with camphor trees.
