From branch campus to standalone school.
Nanzhou Junior High School was founded in 1955 as a branch campus of Provincial Pingtung Senior High School, known then as the "Xizhou Branch" (溪洲分部). After Xizhou Township was renamed Nanzhou in 1956, the school was reorganized into an independent junior high serving the local farming community. Today it remains a small school, with roughly 108 students across five classes, and offers a vocational-prep "skills class" track that includes a sewing program alongside its academic curriculum.
What makes this school worth knowing.
🏫 Born as a Branch Campus
源自省中分部
The school began life in 1955 as the Xizhou Branch of Provincial Pingtung Senior High School, becoming an independent junior high after the township was renamed in 1956.
🧵 A Skills-Class Tradition
技藝班傳統
Alongside standard academics, the school runs a vocational-prep "skills class" (技藝班) track, including a sewing program, giving students an early taste of practical trades.
🌾 A Small Rural Community
小型鄉村學校
With around 108 students across five classes and 21 teachers, the school maintains the close-knit feel typical of Pingtung's farming townships.
Sugar-cane roots, watermelon present.
Nanzhou Township grew up around the sugar-cane trade — originally named Xizhou, it was home to Taiwan's southernmost sugar mill, the Taisugar South Zhou Sugar Refinery (established 1920, now preserved as the South Zhou Tourism Sugar Factory). Today the township's fields have shifted toward watermelon and other produce, but the sugar-era legacy still shapes local identity, and Nanzhou Junior High's own history as a spun-off branch campus mirrors the township's own renaming from Xizhou in 1956. See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
