A century of history, rebuilt for a new era.

Nanzhou Elementary was founded in 1921, during the Japanese colonial era, as "Xizhou Ordinary Elementary School" to educate the children of Japanese employees at the local sugar refinery. After the war it was run by the Taiwan Sugar Corporation as a company school from 1955, before passing to county government control in 1968. The school celebrated its centennial around 2021 and has since undergone a major NT$88.36 million reconstruction, rebuilding 23 classrooms. Its original catchment once covered eight villages before splitting off to form Tong'an and Xibei Elementary Schools in 1958 and 1962.

🍉

Nanzhou Township's identity is anchored in the sugar-cane trade — the township was originally called Xizhou and hosted Taiwan's southernmost sugar mill, the Taisugar South Zhou Sugar Refinery (est. 1920), now preserved as a tourism site. Nanzhou Elementary's own founding as a school for refinery workers' children is a direct thread of that history, while today the area's fields have turned to watermelon and the prized black pearl wax apple (蓮霧). See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
