Nanxing Junior High School was founded in 1968 under Taiwan's nine-year compulsory education policy, opening with 14 classes. Its first principal, Zhu Shiguang, took office on August 1, 1968. The school became a municipal institution in 1982, when Chiayi City was upgraded to provincial-city status, and today has 29 classes and about 698 students.
南興國中創立於民國57年（1968年），為因應九年國民義務教育政策而設立，創校時設有14班。首任校長朱士光先生於1968年8月1日就職。民國71年（1982年）嘉義市升格為省轄市後，改隸市立。目前全校共29班，學生約698人。
