A century of learning high in the mountains.

Nanshan Elementary began in 1920 under Japanese rule as the "Piyanan Aboriginal Children's Education Institute" (卑亞南蕃童教育所), one of many such institutes established to educate Atayal children in Taiwan's mountain regions. It became an independent school in 1962 and took its present name in 1968. Sitting at nearly 1,200 meters above sea level, Nanshan is one of the highest-altitude schools in Yilan County, and it remains active today in developing Indigenous curriculum for its students.
