From an Air Force children's school to a green model campus.
Nanping Elementary was established on February 1, 1950, by the ROC Air Force General Headquarters as "Air Force Yilan Children's School," created to educate the children of Air Force families who had retreated to Yilan with the Nationalist government the previous year. The school was transferred to county government control in 1966 and renamed "Nanping" in honor of Air Force martyr Li Nan-ping (李南屏). It relocated in 1994 to a new campus, completed in phases through 2002, designed around a "school-as-family" courtyard layout. The school has since been recognized as a green building and model green school for its environmental design and education programs.
