Nanjing Elementary School

Nanjing Elementary School originated as a Japanese-era company school inside the Nanjing Sugar Refinery (南靖糖廠) compound, established by Japan's Toyo Sugar Manufacturing Co. around 1908 to 1911, before becoming independent as "Nanjing Ordinary Elementary School" on April 1, 1912. It added an upper elementary division in 1923. After Taiwan's 1945 Retrocession, the school converted to a Taiwan Sugar Corporation private school in September 1946, then to a substitute national school, before being taken over by the Chiayi County Government and renamed Nanjing Elementary School in August 1968, when nine-year compulsory education began. Its Jingxi Branch became independent as Jingxi Elementary School in January 1956, later folding back in 1983. Today the school runs a dedicated "走讀南靖糖廠" (Reading/Touring Nanjing Sugar Refinery) local-history education program, programming and robotics competitions, and bilingual Hoklo/Taiwanese-language instruction.

南靖國小起源於日治時期南靖糖廠內的員工子弟學校，由日本東洋製糖株式會社於1908至1911年間設立，於明治45年（1912年）4月1日獨立為「南靖尋常小學校」。大正12年（1923年）增設高等科。台灣光復後，民國35年（1946年）9月改制為嘉義市私立台糖小學，後轉為代用國民學校，至民國57年（1968年）九年國教實施時由嘉義縣政府接管並更名南靖國民小學。其靖西分校於民國45年（1956年）1月獨立為靖西國小，後於民國72年（1983年）併回。現今學校推動「走讀南靖糖廠」在地歷史教育課程、程式設計與機器人競賽，以及台語雙語教學。
