The school began in 1962 as a branch class of Su'ao Junior High, became an independent branch school in 1966, and was established as a fully independent "Nan'ao Junior High School" in 1968. On August 1, 2000, it was upgraded to a complete school (完全中學) spanning both junior high and senior high divisions. Located directly on the Suhua Highway, it is the only combined junior-and-senior secondary school serving Nan'ao Township — the sole option for local students to attend senior high without leaving the township. Its student population is predominantly Atayal Indigenous.
學校於民國51年（1962年）以蘇澳國中分班形式創立，民國55年（1966年）獨立為分校，民國57年（1968年）正式獨立設校為「南澳國民中學」。民國89年（2000年）8月1日，學校改制為橫跨國中與高中部的完全中學。校址位於蘇花公路旁，是南澳鄉唯一涵蓋國中與高中部的學校，也是當地學生無需離鄉即可就讀高中的唯一選擇。學生以泰雅族原住民為主。
