Local Culture · 在地文化

A name from Kanakanavu oral tradition.

🏞️

According to the Kanakanavu people's own oral tradition, Namasia District takes its name from "Namaasia" (or "Maasia"), a young man in Kanakanavu legend said to have died while saving his people — though different tellings of the story vary in detail. The Nanzixian River running through the district is named Namasia in his memory. The district was long known administratively as Sanmin (encompassing the Minquan, Minzu, and Minsheng areas) before reverting to its Indigenous-rooted name, Namasia, in 2007. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
