From a colonial-era branch to a major city school.
Mingyi Elementary was founded on April 1, 1933, during the Japanese colonial era, under the name "Karenkō-chō Karenkō Kōgakkō Kyū-Shinkō Branch Institute" (花蓮港廳花蓮港公學校舊新港分教場). After Taiwan's Retrocession, it was renamed Mingyi National School on January 25, 1946. Thanks to its location within a large and growing catchment area of downtown Hualien City, the school has expanded over the decades to become one of the largest elementary schools in eastern Taiwan.
