A colonial-era school renamed for a new era.
Minglian Elementary was founded on March 26, 1943, during the Japanese colonial era, under the name "Karenko-shi Nishi Kokumin Gakkō" (花蓮港市西國民學校). After Taiwan's Retrocession in 1945, the school was renamed Minglian, joining the historic core of "Ming-" schools in downtown Hualien City. It briefly took over the site of a girls' vocational school in 1946 before reverting to its own campus in 1952, and opened an attached kindergarten in October 2013.
