Over 130 years at the civic heart of Miaoli.
Jiangong Elementary traces its roots to 1896, when it was founded as the "Miaoli Kokugo Denshūjo" (Japanese-language training institute) during the early years of Japanese colonial rule — making it the oldest modern school in the Miaoli area, with more than 130 years of continuous history. The campus sits on the former site of the Qing-dynasty Miaoli county government yamen, linking the school physically to the county's pre-modern administrative history. It was renamed 建功國民學校 in 1947 after Taiwan's retrocession, and took its current name, 建功國民小學, in 1968. Today the school maintains a dedicated history and culture museum that preserves this long institutional memory for students and visitors alike.

Renamed 建功國民學校 after Taiwan's 1945 retrocession and again as 建功國民小學 in 1968, the school's several name changes trace Taiwan's own 20th-century political transitions.
Miaoli's civic and educational cornerstone.
As Miaoli's very first modern school, built directly on the old county-government site, Jiangong Elementary embodies the civic heart of this Hakka-majority county town — a living link between the Qing-era administrative center and the modern school system that grew up around it. See the Miaoli county page for more on the region.
