Meishan's only junior high, since 1960.

Meishan Junior High traces its roots to 1956, when it was first planned as a Meishan branch of Dalin Junior High, borrowing classrooms at Meishan Elementary. The first five classrooms on its current site were built in 1958, and the school became independent in 1960 as "Chiayi County Meishan Junior High," with Jian Weizhang as its first principal. In 1968, under the nine-year compulsory education reform, it was renamed "Chiayi County Meishan Junior High School," the name it carries today. As the township's only junior high school, it draws students from every tea-farming village across the mountain.

Meishan Township is Chiayi's premier tea-growing mountain region — while the township's older name "Xiaomei" (小梅) relates to plum trees, today the area is synonymous with Alishan-area tea cultivation. As the township's only junior high, Meishan Junior High draws students from the tea-farming villages spread throughout the mountain. See the Chiayi County page for more on the region.
