The founding school of Meishan Township.
Meishan Elementary opened in 1906, during the Japanese colonial era, as "Meizaikeng Public School" — Meishan Township's very first school, established through the advocacy of local leader Wu Yan and others. It was later renamed "Xiaomei Public School" and then "Xiaomei National School." After Taiwan's 1945 retrocession, it became "Xiaomei Township's First National School" in 1946, then "Meishan Township Meishan National School" in 1947 when the township itself was renamed from Xiaomei to Meishan, and finally "Meishan National Elementary School" in 1968 under the nine-year compulsory education reform. Now over 100 years old, it is the oldest school in Meishan Township, and as of the most recent school year enrolls 202 students (106 male, 96 female) across 12 classes.

The name behind the tea, bamboo, and plum industries.
As the founding school of the entire township — from which Meibei, Meizhen, and other schools later split off — Meishan Elementary's century-plus history parallels the development of the township's tea, bamboo, and plum (梅) industries that gave the area its name. See the Chiayi County page for more on the region.
