Named for the hill that shapes its neighborhood.
Meilun Junior High School traces its founding to March 1966, when the Hualien County government began planning it as "Hualien City First County Junior High School" the previous year. It was renamed Meilun Junior High in 1968, taking its name from Meilun — the hill and district on the north side of Hualien City. The school's current buildings were rebuilt in 1996, incorporating a "restroom in every classroom" design that was distinctive for its time.
What makes this school worth knowing.
⛰️ Named for Meilun Hill
以美崙山為名
The school takes its name directly from Meilun, the low hill and surrounding district on Hualien City's north side, anchoring it to a specific local landmark.
🚻 A Restroom in Every Classroom
教室內附設廁所
The 1996 campus rebuild introduced a "restroom in every classroom" layout, an unusual and forward-thinking design choice for a Taiwanese public school of that era.
🏛️ Planned Since 1965
1965年開始規劃
County planning for the school began in 1965, a year before it opened as Hualien City's first county-run junior high school — part of Taiwan's postwar expansion of universal junior high education.
Anchored to Meilun's identity.
Named for and located near Meilun Mountain, the low hill on Hualien City's north side that gives the surrounding district its identity and remains a popular local park and viewpoint. See the Hualien County schools page for more on the region.
