From borrowed classrooms to a namesake honoring a martyr.

Zhongzheng Junior High & Elementary School was founded in 1950 as "Matsu National School," beginning with just six classes in borrowed facilities under its first principal, Zhu Jinhua, alongside branch schools scattered across several villages. In 1966 the school was renamed to honor Chen Qingchou, a martyr born in Lienchiang who took part in the 1911 Guangzhou (Yellow Flower Mound) uprising. A junior high division was added in 1970 at the school's current site in Matsu Village, and in 1974 the school was consolidated into its present unified junior-and-elementary structure as part of Taiwan's nine-year compulsory education reform.

Growing up through Matsu's military-administration years.

🪖

The school's early growth through branch schools scattered across village communities took place during Matsu's Cold War frontline era, when the archipelago was governed under military administration. Its 1966 renaming to honor a local revolutionary martyr further ties its institutional identity to the region's history of struggle and remembrance. See the Matsu county page for more on the region.
