From the region's only junior high to Matsu's sole senior high.
National Matsu Senior High School traces its roots to the era when it was the only junior high school in the entire Matsu archipelago, admitting just a single class each year. It was upgraded to "Fujian Provincial Matsu Senior High School" in 1968, relocated to its current waterfront campus in 1976 as a senior-high-only institution, and became a centrally administered "National" school in 1984. Today the school has graduated more than 4,500 alumni and operates as a residential school, drawing students from across the archipelago and from Taiwan proper.

From a barren fishing village to a cultural destination.
The school explicitly frames its mission as cultivating "Matsu culture" for its students, and its former fisheries/aquaculture vocational track directly reflected the region's traditional fishing economy. The school's own materials describe Matsu's transformation from a "barren fishing village" into today's cultural tourism destination. See the Matsu county page for more on the region.
