The junior high that nine-year education built.
Manzhou Junior High School was established in 1968, the year Taiwan implemented nine-year compulsory education nationwide. Before then, Manzhou's remoteness and poor transportation meant only elementary-level schooling existed in the township — first just Manzhou Elementary School, with feeder elementary schools including Jiuben, Yonggang, and Changle added over time to build up the district that the junior high would eventually serve. The township's name, "滿州" (Manzhou), comes from a local Paiwan-language pronunciation and has no connection to the historical Manchuria. The school is currently led by principal Chen Ying-bang.

🏫 The Hub of a Feeder-School Network
學區樞紐
Manzhou Junior High draws students from a network of small feeder elementary schools built up over decades, including Jiuben, Yonggang, and Changle.
Where the hawks fly and the old songs echo.
Manzhou Township is nationally known for the autumn gray-faced buzzard hawk (灰面鵟鷹) migration, when thousands of raptors pass over the township's ridgelines on their way south each year, drawing birdwatchers from across Taiwan. The township is also cited as the birthplace of "思想起" (Thinking Of), the classic Hengchun-Manzhou folk ballad sung to moon-guitar (月琴) accompaniment. Manzhou Junior High's students grow up immersed in both traditions — the seasonal rhythm of migrating birds overhead and the region's centuries-old singing culture. See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
