A century of school life on a changing island.
Lyudao Elementary opened on May 1, 1921, as "Fire-Burned Island Public School" — "Fire-Burned Island" (火燒島) being Green Island's old name under Japanese rule. It opened modestly, with just two classes and 85 students. The school was renamed multiple times through the decades before settling on its current name in 1968. Its old Japanese-era school building and artifacts have since been documented in Taiwan's National Cultural Memory Bank, preserving a physical record of the island's earliest formal education.

🏫 A School Older Than "Green Island" Itself
When the school opened in 1921, the island was still known as "Fire-Burned Island" (火燒島) — the name "Green Island" (綠島) came later, making the school older than the island's modern name.

Through the island's many transformations.
As one of the island's two elementary schools, Lyudao Elementary has educated Green Island's small population through the island's many transformations — from Japanese colonial outpost, to Cold War-era detention island, to today's scuba diving and hot springs tourist destination. See the Taitung county page for more on the region.
