Dashe Elementary School, in Lujhu District, was founded in 1900 during the Japanese colonial era, making it one of the oldest schools in the Lujhu plain — it has now marked more than 124 school anniversaries. In 1943, the school gave rise to Luzhu Elementary School, which split off to serve the growing town center. Today Dashe operates Kaohsiung's only solar-powered ecological greenhouse, used for hands-on environmental education, and its taiko drum team has placed second nationally in competition.
